| The walk was done in two stages, Rodmell followed by Southease, starting from Monk's House car park, although can be done in one go. | |
Turn left from the Monks House car park, and follow the road past Monks House until you reach a junction turn right up the road signed "To Barley Field" |
Follow this road until it turns right where you reach Place Bungalow. Just to the right of the gate is a gap where the footpath runs (DO NOT enter through the gate as this is private property!). |
This will follow the side of Place Bungalow, where you reach a cross path turn right past the telegraph pole and across Barley field to the main road. |
At the main road turn right, and follow the grass verge just beyond Northease Manor, until you reach a concrete farm track with signs for Northease Farm & Breaky Bottom Vineyard (also marked Public Bridleway). |
Follow the concrete track (also known as White Way) past the farm buildings and up around the left bend, then right bend to the South Downs Way. |
When you reach the crosspath with the South Downs Way turn left up to Mill Hill to a track where you turn left along the valley. |
This is where the walk can either continue on the South Downs Way to Southease (then follow that walk in reverse as listed) or return to Rodmell down Mill Lane. |
At the Rodmell junction cross the road. Turn right at The Abergavenny Arms Free House, back to the Monks House car park. |
For a small detour right off the road to the car park will take you to St Peter's Church and School. |
Turn right from the Monks House Car Park, and follow the footpath (stony track) across the The Brooks to the River Ouse. |
When you reach the River Ouse, climb the bank and head right along the river-bank path for about a mile, passing 4 step stiles. |
When you reach a road and a sign post (Lewes 4 miles). For a small detour turn left over the bridge and follow the Road to Southease Railway Station. |
Retrace your steps over the bridge again and follow the road through Southease village past the Green and St Peter's Church on your left to the main road. |
At the main road turn right and follow the South Downs Way , by crossing the road near the juction to Telscombe. |
From here you can follow the South Downs Way, up to the South Downs and continue the walk in one go following the directions in reverse. Or walk back to Rodmell along the main road, by crossing the road and using the footpath. (Rodmell) |
